Fes to Merzouga 2-Day Desert Tour

Today we will depart Fes early, ideally by 8am, for a quick but genuinely spectacular transfer straight into the Sahara. The road climbs into the Middle Atlas, and within an hour the plains around Fes give way to pine and cedar forest. Our first stop is Ifrane, a curious alpine-style town built by the French in the 1930s with sloped red roofs that feel more Alpine than North African. From here we continue to the Azrou Cedar Forest, home to some of the largest and oldest Atlas cedars in the world, and a resident troop of wild Barbary macaques, one of the few primate species found outside Asia's and Africa's tropical regions — your driver stops here for twenty to thirty minutes so you can walk among the ancient trees. Continuing south, we descend toward Midelt, a former mining town and gateway to the High Atlas, where we typically stop for lunch. From Midelt, the road follows the dramatic Ziz Gorges and then the Ziz Valley, a ribbon of palm groves and mudbrick ksour villages winding through an otherwise barren, rocky landscape, with several photo stops at panoramic viewpoints along the way. As the afternoon light softens, we arrive in Merzouga on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune sea, where camel handlers meet us for the final leg of the day's journey — a genuinely unforgettable 45-60 minute sunset trek across the dunes to our exclusive desert camp, nestled among some of the highest dunes in Morocco. Enjoy a traditional dinner cooked over an open fire, and later, gather around the campfire as Berber musicians play traditional drums under one of the most spectacular starscapes anywhere on Earth.

For those willing to wake before dawn, this morning offers one of the most memorable experiences of the trip: climbing a nearby dune in the dark to watch the sunrise transform the desert from soft pink to deep gold, the changing light over the dunes making for spectacular photographs. Afterwards, return to camp for a simple Berber breakfast of flatbread, honey, and sweet mint tea before saying goodbye to your camel guides and driving back to Merzouga village by 4x4, where your driver will be waiting for the return journey to Fes. We retrace the scenic route back through the Ziz Valley and climb once more into the Middle Atlas via Er-Rachidia and Midelt, with a lunch stop along the way. Your driver may suggest a second, brief stop at the Azrou Cedar Forest or in Ifrane if timing allows, before we complete the descent to Fes, arriving in the early evening. Over these two fast-paced days, you will have crossed the Middle Atlas through cedar forests inhabited by wild Barbary apes, driven the length of the striking Ziz Valley oasis, and spent an unforgettable night sleeping beneath the stars among the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi — a genuinely efficient way to experience the true Sahara without needing to dedicate a full week to the journey.
